How to get a job: What skills employers are looking for during covid

OMG – How many changes have we had in 2020, right?

At the Academy of Entrepreneurs we are all about future-focus, so we spoke to market leaders and leading startups to find out what skills are needed in 2020 and….. #beyond!!

# Emotional Intelligence

Forbes reports that emotional intelligence ranks high on employers’ wish list. Applicants who can recognize and respond to their own emotions and the emotions of others are in high demand, as this skill allows them to navigate the complexities of social interactions in the workplace.

# Tech Savviness

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is here – more than EVER! Industry 4.0 refers to technologies such as facile ID recognition, mixed reality, automation, digital healthcare sensors, — is changing how we live, work, live, and interact with our family/friends/clients/work colleagues.

Employers want to hire candidates who are comfortable adapting to new technologies.

# Problem-Solving Capabilities

Hahaha…. Did someone say problems?

Here in Australia the hiring managers often ask interviewees to talk about a time when they solved a complex problem in a creative or innovative way, so be prepared to answer!

Candidates who possess refined problem-solving skills stand out from their peers.

Here are 8 steps to help you Problem-Solve

  1. Identify the issues. Be clear about what the problem is.
  2. Understand everyone’s interests.
  3. List the possible solutions (options)
  4. Evaluate the options.
  5. Select an option or options.
  6. Document the agreement(s).
  7. Have clear communication between all relevant parties.
  8. Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation.

# Adaptability

The only constant in life—and in business—is change. To stand out in 2020, embrace that reality and make sure to show up with a positive attitude and open-minded professionalism, especially in stressful situations.

Here are 4 Ways to Boost Your Adaptability Skills

  1. Change Your Thought Process. Let go of the “Well, that’s the way we’ve always done it” mentality.
  2. Force Yourself to Take Risks. Little progress is made without risk.
  3. Encourage Others to Be Open Minded. One of the best ways you can develop an open mind is to encourage others to do the same.
  4. Embrace Learning, Pivoting and Daily progress 🙂

# Willingness to Actively Help Others

Companies understand that if they want to gain a competitive edge, they need to hire individuals who can build successful teams.

“Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford

Team members who work together and help each other so they can succeed as a unit are valued in the workplace.

Helping your community is super valuable too. It not only boosts your brand awareness but it also makes you feel better and makes the world a better place (especially now in 2020, where so many new challenges have risen)

Social Entrepreneurial skills are super in demand

# Communication & Negotiation

Did you know that 93% of what we say is non-verbal communication?

As a leader, you need to develop the ability to pitch yourself, whether it means pitching at a job interview, your team, clients or investors to generate significant amounts of capital – it is a skill that most of us have to use on a daily basis.

Strong communication skills help people relay information clearly and concisely.

This saves time and helps avoid the misinterpretation of messages.

It’s one thing to have a great product or concept. It’s another to be able to persuade people to buy into it. Strong negotiation skills are a must-have in the workplace, regardless of whether an employee works in sales or project management.
