Study Nsw, Amazon And Academy Of Entrepreneurs Powertalk For Getting A Job

In collaboration with Study NSW, the Academy of Entrepreneurs has been building and running a series of employability events to help international students find their dream job.

This time, we have had the opportunity to work with Amazon.

The day began with the tour of their incredible office by Fatima Merchant (BDM – Customer Enablement) starting from their kitchen which can be found on each floor,  adjoining meeting rooms and through to the main lecture room. The tropical patterned walls and plants throughout the office gave a glimpse of how a cutting-edge tech company can work efficiently without forgetting to be creative.

Next, a presentation by Samantha Stow (transformational Executive Manager), spoke of the company’s vision, culture and mission as well as the current cloud skills shortage faced by various groups and organizations.

Workers in Asia Pacific and Japan are predicted to need digital skills training over the year, in order to keep pace with technological advancements. Included AWS Cloud Quest, the newest way to build your AWS skills.

The next presenter David (Global Lead Development Manager AUS/NZ/SK) emphasised the importance of being confident, which would make you better than 50% of employees already in the position you’re applying for. He also mentioned the Bar Raiser program, which is a unique part of the Amazon interview process with Amazon’s 16 Leadership Principles. By bringing in somebody who’s not associated with the team, the best long-term hiring decisions are made and they can ensure that the company is always serving, surprising, and innovating for customers.

Lastly, James Bank (ANZ Early Careers Manager), who runs an internship program at Amazon, shared tips for getting the job :

  • Learn how to lose (business is a competition, every day)
  • Build up your cv (volunteer, do extra certificates- how can your cv look better)
  • How will it stand out (visually etc)
  • Your mindset (do anything out of your comfort zone! Challenge yourself. Learn new skills)
  • Build your professional network (linkedIn etc)

The students got to learn real life staff career stories, the process of getting hired at Amazon and the mindset required!

Looking for a tech job? Why not start with AWS’ free training program?

Amazon has a program called ‘AWS Cloud Quest’,  for a fun and interactive way to learn about cloud computing. This 6-week series on the AWS Twitch channel is just for you, an open-world role-playing game that teaches you how to build real-world AWS solutions using cloud concepts and exercises.
